Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is Automatic Renewal?
You no longer need to manually renew some of your library items – our automatic renewal service will take care of the renewals for you! All items eligible for renewal will be automatically renewed 4 days before their due date (up to two times). The new due date will be extended from the original due date, adding another loan period. Customers are responsible for knowing the date in which an item is due.
How does it work?
Any items on your account that are eligible for renewal will now renew automatically 4 days before their due date. Items will be renewed for the new due date from the original due date, adding another loan period. Customers will receive notice of item auto-renewal 4 days prior to the due date.
For example, an item that is due on November 15, and has a 28-day loan period, will be automatically renewed on November 11 (4 days prior to the due date), and that item will now be due on December 13 (28 days from the original due date of November 15).
How will I know an item has been renewed?
-
If you have “Email Address” as your notification option (and the email address is valid), you will receive an email stating which items have been auto-renewed, and which are due back to the library (if they are not eligible for renewal). If you have items that are checked out, but are not yet due or due to be auto-renewed, you will see those items in the email as well.
-
If you have “TXT Messaging” as your notification option, you will receive a text message stating that items have been auto-renewed and/or that items are due back (if they are not eligible for renewal).
-
If you have “Phone” as your notification option AND a valid email address, you will receive the same email message as indicated above.
-
If you have “Phone” as your notification option but DO NOT also have a valid email address in your account, you will NOT receive a notification that items have been auto-renewed or are due back. You must manually check your account online or contact any Burlington County Library branch to update your notification preferences.
-
Please note that customers are responsible for knowing the date in which an item is due.
Which items are eligible for renewal?
Most physical items (books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, movies, and video games) are eligible for up to two renewals, as long as another customer has not placed a hold on the item and your account is in good standing.
Items will not renew automatically if:
- There is a hold on the item.
- The item has already been renewed the maximum number of times (2).
- Your account is blocked due to fines or fees.
- Your account has expired and must be renewed.
- They are part of a non-renewable collection, such as Museum Passes, Borrow a Book Club, Classroom Kits, etc.
- They are part of our Device Lending Program (Tablet Kits, Mobile WiFi Hotspots, Chromebooks and Launchpads).
- If you need to keep these items beyond the initial loan period, you may call the library and speak to a staff member. Depending on the circumstances, the staff member may grant additional time.
- They are Interlibrary Loan items.
- They are digital items (eBooks, eAudiobooks, etc.).
If an item did not automatically renew or I don’t return it on time, are there still fines?

Can I still renew manually?
Yes. If you wish to renew an item prior to its automatic renewal date, simply renew it through your account online or speak to a staff member at any Burlington County Library branch. Manual renewals will extend the borrowing period from the date of renewal.
For example, an item that is due on November 15, and has a 28-day loan period, gets renewed manually on November 4, that item will now be due on December 2 (28 days from the renewal date of November 4).
Do I have to sign up for automatic renewals?
No. This is an automatic service through your library and requires no sign up on your part.
Can I opt-out of automatic renewals?
Customers cannot opt-out of automatic renewals at this time.
