If You Are Using the Overdrive App, Read This!
For quite a while, our ebook and audiobook users have been able to use both the Overdrive app and the Libby app to read and listen to the items in our collection. But, as often happens with technology, things become outdated. Last year, the Overdrive company began to phase out its support of the Overdrive app in favor of the Libby app. Users were no longer able to download the Overdrive app, but if the app was already downloaded to your device it would still work. However, in April of 2023 that is going to change.
In technological terms, when something goes “sunset” it means that is going to be decommissioned. So in April of 2023 the Overdrive app will officially be sunset. Users who try to use the Overdrive app you will get a message letting you know that the Overdrive app has been discontinued.
Don’t fear! The Libby app is an accessible and easy way to continue reading and listening to our vast collection of materials. All your Overdrive account information will transfer over to your Libby account. And Overdrive offers many resources to help with the transition:
- Libby help: How-to videos and step-by-step instructions on Libby Help explain how to use the app.
- Overview page about the transition to Libby: This informational page for users includes an overview about the sunset, FAQs, and training opportunities.
- Virtual training: Users can sign up for a virtual training session hosted by team OverDrive.
- Options for Kindle Fire devices: Amazon has not yet the Libby app to the Amazon Appstore so the OverDrive app will remain available for Kindle Fire users to download and access until further notice. Users with Kindle Fire devices can also sideload Libby manually following these steps.
And, as always, feel free to reach out to BCLS staff with any and all questions you might have!
