Senior Citizens' Day

Senior Citizens Day, a day set aside to support and show appreciation for the older members of our community, is Aug. 21! At BCLS, we offer a wide array of resources and events for our senior customers all year round. Check out some of our many offerings below:

Yoga and Meditation

  • Yoga At the LibraryAug. 15, 5:30 - 6:30 pm at Evesham Library; Aug. 19, 7 - 8 pm at Pinelands Library; and Aug. 21, 2 - 3 pm at Burlington County Library
    Join us for an all-levels yoga flow with a focus on the foundation of poses. Move through seated and standing poses combining breath-work and alignment. Stretch and strengthen your body while relaxing your mind and spirit. Registration required.
  • Gentle YogaAug. 15, 11 am - 12:30 pm and Aug. 19, 5:30 - 7 pm  at Bordentown Library
    Join a certified yoga instructor for a slower-paced program focused on mastering poses on the floor and while balanced on a mat. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat. Registration required.
  • Guided MeditationAug. 24, 2 - 3 pm at Pinelands Library
    Focus on practical mindfulness techniques and breathwork to promote greater mental-emotional awareness and deepen a calm balance in your central nervous system. Open to everyone and led by a certified meditation Instructor, this class offers a straightforward, inclusive approach to building inner resilience, increasing clarity, and providing inner peace. Participants will be seated comfortably in provided chairs and talking will not be permitted. Registration required.

Games and Hobbies

  • Self-Directed Murder Mystery Aug. 22, 5 - 7 pm at Bordentown Library
    Pop into the library any time between 5 and 7 pm and try to solve a crime! Follow the clues hidden all over the adult services section, extract the evidence and formulate a solution. Detectives who solve correctly will win a small prize. Please register your team, consisting of one to five detectives, in advance to ensure enough materials are available. 
  • Movie: The Lost City – Aug. 26, 2 - 4 pm at Bordentown Library
    Join us for a viewing of The Lost City (2022). Synopsis: A reclusive romance novelist on a book tour with her cover model gets swept up in a kidnapping attempt that lands them both in a cutthroat jungle adventure. 
  • Mahjong Meetup – Fridays, 1 - 4 pm at Bordentown Library
    Join us for Mahjong on Friday afternoons. Brush off your tiles and play the game that started in 19th century China and has spread through the world. Registration is not required. 
  • Chess for Adults and Seniors – Sept. 6, 6 - 8 pm at Pinelands Library
    Up for a chess match? Wanting to learn the game? Come by the Pinelands Library to pass the time with the centuries old game of skill, strategy, and sometimes, sheer luck. Registration required. 

Arts and Crafts

  • LGBTQ+ Crafting Social Aug. 26, 6:30 - 8 pm  at Bordentown Library
    Welcome all LGBTQ+ adults and their allies! Whether you’re a digital artist, fiber crafter, painter, costumer, or enthusiast of any other art form, bring your current work-in-progress to library to socialize while crafting! (Please note: this is not an instructive class.) Registration recommended, but not required.
  • Knot Your Momma's Yarn Club – First Thursday of the month, 6:30 - 8 pm at Bordentown Library
    Fiber artists are invited to bring their current work in progress to an hour of fun and socializing. This is not an instructional class, but the group learns from each other. Registration is not required. 
  • Adult Grab and Go: 3D Butterflies Sept. 10, 10 am - 8:30 pm  at Pinelands Library
    Grab supplies to make beautiful 3D butterflies while supplies last.
  • Knitting and Needlework TimeSept. 10, 10 am - 12 pm at Burlington County Library
    Bring your latest project, exchange ideas and swap patterns!  All levels of experience are welcome. This is not a facilitated instructional class. Attendees will have the opportunity to share their love of needlework, exchange ideas and get a few tips and tricks to improve their skills. Registration not required.

Education

  • Introduction to Computers Aug. 23, 2 - 3:30 pm at Maple Shade Library
    Learn the basics of operating a computer, from key vocabulary, to using a mouse and a keyboard, to helpful shortcuts. This class is perfect for beginners and those who might be rusty on the basics. Registration not required.
  • Medicare with Confidence - Sept. 10, 11 am - 12 pm at Evesham Library
    Are you turning 65? Do you have questions about Medicare? This educational seminar will educate you on Medicare basics, important terminology, enrollment periods, plan types and cost assistance. Medicare is not a one size fits all. Registration required.
  • Healthcare Options: Get Covered New Jersey Sept. 17, 2 - 4 pm at Burlington County Library
    Join us for this four-part series on healthcare options! This workshop will cover Medicare, the insurance for retired seniors or seniors over the age of 65. If you are new to Medicare, this is a great opportunity to learn about the basics; if you are already enrolled, you can learn even more about your insurance. Registration required.
  • Smartphone Basics – Sept. 4, 11:30 am - 1 pm
    Learn the basic functions of your smartphone, essential gestures for touchscreen navigation in Apple and Android, and a variety of useful apps for everyday tasks and entertainment. Bring your charged smartphone to class. Registration required. 
  • Learn Like a Librarian: Media & Information Literacy – Part 1: Sept. 3, 3 pm & 6 pm; Part 2: Sept. 13, 3 pm & 6 pm at Burlington County Library
    Today’s world is overflowing with information: not only is the amount of information we interact with daily going up, but the ways we take it in, share it, and investigate it are shifting and growing all the time, making for a vast and confusing landscape! Part One of this class will introduce and develop fundamental concepts of information literacy and show how they relate to academic and traditionally published information. Part Two of this class will review the fundamental concepts introduced in the previous class and apply them to online video content and avoiding scams. Registration required. 
  • Medicare Questions Answered – Sept. 23, 6:30 - 7:30 pm at Evesham Library
    Join us for an educational workshop focused on providing answers to all your Medicare questions. Whether you're new to Medicare or reviewing your options, this seminar will provide valuable insight into your coverage choices, key considerations during your plan review, and critical enrollment deadlines. Insurance Specialist Jason L'Hommedieu will also discuss upcoming changes to Medicare and how they might impact your health care planning. Registration required.
  • Life Cycle Legal Needs: Estate Planning 101 Sept. 26, 6:30 - 8:30 pm at Burlington County Library
    This class will offer a simple guide to secure your home, protect your assets and ensure your family's future. Join us as Suzana Das teaches you how to plan to get your affairs in order, shield your hard-earned property and more! Registration required.

One-on-One Assistance
If you need help with computer skills, phone skills, resume-writing and more, schedule an hour appointment with one of our librarians who can assist you. Follow the link to start scheduling your appointment. First, select your desired branch location, then choose from our available dates and times, and you’ll be prompted to fill out a short form. Just tell us what you want to learn and our librarians will be happy to help!

Mobile Learning Lab
Visiting locations throughout Burlington County and beyond, our Mobile Learning Lab takes our computer classes out of the library and brings them to you. Learning Lab classes review computer and tablet basics, highlighting important vocabulary and skills needed to interact with technology at an intermediate level. Courses include mouse basics as well as an introduction to typing on a keyboard. 

Library Accessibility
BCLS strives to be a welcoming place for all members of our community and we have a variety of services available to make your library experience as accessible as possible, including:

  • Audiobooks: Listen to a book; ideal for visually-impaired individuals. 
  • Large Print Books with enlarged text, enabling an easier reading experience for our visually-impaired customers.  
  • Mobile Library, our service that brings items and resources to stops all around Burlington County, providing library access to those who can’t visit us in person.
  • Library by Mail, another ideal service for those in our community who can’t visit our locations in person. We can send library materials right to your home through the postal service! This normally costs $1, but is available free of charge to those who are homebound.
  • Talking Book & Braille Center Audio Player for visually impaired customers are available for all library customers. To use this service, please register with the Talking Book & Braille Center. 
  • Video Relay Service available at the Burlington County Library for our deaf and hard-of-hearing customers who can speak ASL. This service connects you to an ASL interpreter over a videophone and an appointment is required.
