The fall season kicks into high gear in October, which means it’s time for pumpkin patches, hot apple cider, spooky stories and scary movies. If you’re ready to catch some Halloween spirit, sprinkled with a dash of horror, check out these hair-raising books and films:
Books to Pick Up:
- The Shining by Stephen King
This classic modern American horror follows aspiring writer Jack Torrance at his new job at the Overlook. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. This is the terrifying story of a family who, shortly after moving, discovers that dark spirits have possessed their home and that their son has inexplicably fallen into a coma. Trying to escape the haunting and save their son, they move again only to realize that it was not their house that was haunted. - Freaky (Rated R)
Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler is just trying to survive high school when she becomes the newest target of the Butcher, her town's infamous serial killer. The Butcher's mystical ancient dagger causes him and Millie to wake up in each other's bodies, and Millie learns that she has just 24 hours to get her body back before it is permanent. This leads him on a desperate race against time when he discovers her true intent.

- Suspiria (Rated R)
A newcomer to a fancy ballet academy gradually comes to realize that the school is a front for something far more sinister and supernatural amidst a series of grisly murders. This is Italian horror-master Dario Argento’s best-known and most acclaimed film. - The House at the End of the Street (Rated PG-13)
After moving with her mother to a small town, a teenager finds that an accident happened in the house at the end of the street. Things get more complicated when she befriends a boy. A double murder is not an accident. - Relic (Rated R)
When elderly mother Edna inexplicably vanishes, her daughter Kay and granddaughter Sam rush to their family’s decaying country home, finding clues of her increasing dementia scattered around the house. After Edna returns just as mysteriously as she disappeared and her behavior turns increasingly volatile, all begin to sense that an insidious presence in the house might be taking control of her. - The Babadook (Rated TV-MA)
In this terrifying thriller, a mother must protect her son from an evil, supernatural entity that has escaped the pages of a children’s book and is lurking in their home. - The Crazies (Rated R)

When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.
