New Jersey

Wheaton Arts – A South Jersey staple, Wheaton Arts is a 45-acre campus featuring not only the Museum of American Glass (home to the world’s largest hand-blown glass bottle) but also the Down Jersey Folklife Center, Gallery of Fine Craft and several studios used for teaching craft classes. It’s open April through December.

New York

Children’s Museum of Manhattan – CMOM takes interactive exhibits to the next level! Unlike most museums, its Inside Art: Create, Climb, Collaborate series encourages you to be hands-on with its colorful and immersive works. Here, you can both learn and play at the same time.

Guggenheim – Wind your way through six stories of thought-provoking pieces at one of the world’s premiere art institutions. The focus is on everything from 19th century impressionists to present day mixed-media artists. And, with a Frank Lloyd Wright design, even the building itself is a work of art!

The Jewish Museum – Located “at the intersection of art and Jewish culture,” the museum in New York City has some 30,000 items tracing over 4,000 years of history. The collection features the old (medieval ceremonial lamps and 2,000-year-old armor) and the new (contemporary art and a photograph series of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s famous collars) alike.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) – Like its uptown companion the Guggenheim, MoMA’s collection is centered on contemporary and modern art, focusing on anything between 1880 and today. Don’t forget to stop by the MoMA Design Store to pick up chic gifts for any occasion!

Pennsylvania

African American Museum in Philadelphia – One of the first organizations dedicated to the experience of African Americans and the African Diaspora, the museum combines art, culture and history to tell a story stretching across hundreds of years and thousands of miles. Some highlights include: the 500,000+ photographs and photo negatives of the Jack T. Franklin Collection; musical instruments, textiles, and other artifacts from the Philadelphia Civic Center Museum; and portraits and sculptures from the CCH Pounder-Koné Collection.

Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts – Covering artists from Winslow Homer to Alice Neel, PAFA seeks to “tell America’s diverse story through art” with works spanning the whole of the country’s history. Check out the painting, sculpture and modern art pieces that reflect America’s past, present, and future with a focus on Philadelphia, and a mission to promote underrepresented voices.
