As the nation prepares to celebrate America250, there’s no better place to reflect on our shared history than right here in Burlington County. With more than three centuries of rich stories, diverse communities and cultural landmarks, Burlington County is a living piece of the American journey.
Founded in 1677, the City of Burlington was once the capital of West Jersey and remains full of colonial charm. You can step into our industrial past at the Roebling Museum, explore the scenic trails of the Pinelands—America’s first National Preserve—or stroll through Whitesbog Village, where the cultivated blueberry was born.
Our county is also home to one of New Jersey’s most significant African-American histories. Visit the historic community of Timbuctoo or the Underground Railroad Museum to learn about the courageous individuals who fought for freedom and equality.
The Burlington County Library System has played its own important role in the county’s story. Founded in 1921 by three forward-thinking teachers, BCLS became New Jersey’s first county library system—starting with book trucks, home stations and school rooms to bring books to even the most rural communities. Today, BCLS continues that mission, offering programs and resources that reflect the county’s diversity and history.
As we approach 250 years of American independence, Burlington County invites you to rediscover the people, places and ideas that helped shape the nation—right here at home. From Revolutionary War sites and agricultural innovation to cultural preservation and community learning, there’s so much to explore, remember and celebrate.
