Renovation Project Turns Pemberton Library into Modern Community Hub

From New Tech to Cozy Nooks: A Fresh Chapter Begins at Pemberton Library

We’re excited to announce that a major renovation project at the Pemberton Library is moving along smoothly! The extensive design updates and structural improvements, which began in 2024, are expected be completed by later in 2025. The redesign will not only enhance the overall customer experience but also enable library staff to expand programming through partnerships with a wide range of local community organizations.

The recently completed first phase brought exciting updates to the children’s room, including interior construction, a vibrant new paint scheme, refreshed carpeting, modern shelving and comfortable seating. A LEGO© Discovery Table and other new play equipment now keep little ones engaged and entertained. With these enhancements, children can enjoy cozy reading nooks while parents relax and connect with others in newly designed lounge areas. (The approximately $200,000 in Phase I improvements was funded through Special Purpose Funding included in the state’s 2023 budget.)

“It’s been incredibly gratifying to see the initial phase of improvements come to life,” said Ranjna Das, BCLS Director. “Pemberton Library is a vital part of our library system, and serves as an essential resource for residents of Pemberton Borough, Pemberton Township and the nearby Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.”

Phase II of the project, currently underway, is funded by a $685,000 federal Capital Projects Fund grant administered by the New Jersey State Library. This phase includes:

  • Expansion and transformation of the teen room into a larger teen and technology lounge.
  • Construction of a new technology lab to host classes, programs and workshops – ranging from beginner to advanced levels – and to support independent learning.
  • Creation of two small-group meeting rooms for virtual appointments, such as telehealth visits and job interviews.
  • Redesign of the main floor into a central reference and circulation hub, featuring public-access computers, lounge seating and communal work tables.

Christina Nemphos, Pemberton Branch Manager and Chief Librarian of Branch Services, said the renovated teen space will include lounge seating ideal for reading, socializing and using devices, along with tables suited for both individual and group work. “It will be a perfect spot for homework, projects and collaborations,” she said.

Technology upgrades will include new study rooms equipped with flat screens for virtual appointments and meetings. The new technology center will also feature a 3D printer, laser cutter, Cricut (cutting) machine and sewing machines – and the expanded space will allow more advanced instructional classes.

Nemphos emphasized the library’s role as a connector to information – not just through books and digital resources, but also by drawing on the knowledge of community partners to bridge service. Prior to the renovation, local residents were surveyed to help staff better understand how the library is used.

“We took that feedback into account, and we’ll be using both the new and existing spaces to host job skill-building workshops, health programs and educational events in partnership with local organizations,” Nemphos said. The Pemberton branch currently partners with Deborah Hospital, Virtua Health, Goodwill Industries, Aspire Youth, CAMCare Health Corporation and America Works.

There is a strong interest in workforce development, access to health information, digital literacy and career advancement,” Nemphos said. “We’re thrilled not only to be able to present a fresh new look at Pemberton Library, but also to expand access and create meaningful opportunities for our community.”
