When you close your eyes and picture a library, what do you see? Maybe the huge marble-walled and table-lined reading room of the New York Public Library? Or the sprawling shelves and wood-paneled walls of the Library of Trinity College in Dublin? While rows of books and respectful silence might define the libraries of our minds, in reality there is much more to explore at your local library!
A number of articles have discussed the role that libraries can play as the missing “third spaces” in modern American life; places where people can spend time together outside of home or work. Libraries are community hubs, often located in the heart of town, and their role continues to evolve. While borrowing books is still thriving at BCLS, you'll find plenty of other reasons to stop by!
New Spaces
Work at Pemberton was completed in March 2026, capping off a two-year project. Nearly every part of the building was updated, but several new spaces stand out: a Children's Learning Center dedicated to STEM programming for kids and their families; bookable meeting rooms for everything from tutoring sessions to virtual job interviews; a technology lab for the library's growing lineup of free classes; and a teen tech lounge designed to expand access to technology and create a welcoming space for teens to learn, create and connect.
Meanwhile, construction began at Cinnaminson Library in April 2026, bringing plans for a modern technology center and a dedicated teen space – one of the community’s most requested features. Looking ahead, a newly announced Learning Commons at Burlington County Library will create another flexible space for learning, collaboration and innovation, with even more exciting changes on the horizon.
New Tech
As we adapt our library spaces to meet the evolving needs of the community, we're also investing in new technology and digital resources that position BCLS for the future. In addition to familiar services like Wi-Fi hotspots, printers and scanners, BCLS now offers an expanding collection of technology and equipment for patrons to borrow, explore and create with. This includes 3-D printers, laser cutters, embroidery equipment, STEM kits for kids, audio recording tech and more! Some of these are only available during library programming or with staff assistance, so please contact us to learn more.
New Vision
Libraries have always been about more than books. They connect people with knowledge, technology, and opportunities to learn, create and gather. At BCLS, we're building on that tradition by reimagining our spaces and expanding our services to better meet the needs of our community. These updates will allow us to offer more classes and events, provide access to emerging technologies and specialized equipment and create welcoming spaces where people can connect and collaborate. Join us as BCLS continues to grow — and stay tuned for what's next!
